Electrolysis is permanent hair removal that uses electrical energy (current) to destroy the hair germinating cells eliminating the hair’s ability to regenerate. It is a process. Not a one-time procedure.
Electrolysis is the only FDA approved permanent hair removal method. It may be performed on everyone, regardless of hair color or skin tone.
There is a sensation involved in the treatment. You may experience a mild heat sensation or stinging. It varies by individual and is based on many factors, including hydration, caffeination, hormones, etc.
GREAT NEWS! There's numbing cream available, both over the counter, and prescription (ask your doctor). If you're sensitive, consider using a numbing cream. If you choose to do so, you will need to follow the directions and timing on the package and apply it prior to your appointment.
Your Electrologist (Me. Carrie. Hi!) is incredibly sensitive and is personally able to receive electrolysis treatments with the use of prescription numbing cream. Seriously, there's no reason to be uncomfortable if you're sensitive like me.
Please stop waxing, tweezing, threading, or any other method which mechanically removes the hair from the follicle prior to your consultation. The electrologist needs the hair to be visible above the skin in order to treat and remove it. Generally, hair must be 1/8 to 3/16's of an inch long in order to ensure the hair is not pushed back into the follicle during the treatment.
Mechanical removal methods should also not be used because they can actually make the hair growth increase, as the action brings blood flow to the treatment area. Additionally, these methods distort the follicle, making electrolysis treatment more difficult to perform.
Please also refrain from chemical removal (Nair, etc.) of your hair.
Electrolysis is a process, and a commitment. In order to have the best results, the hair should be treated in the growth phase. Unfortunately, your Electrologist is not a superhero. No x-ray vision. We can't see underneath your skin. Therefore, a hair follicle may need to be treated more than once.
Your hair growth is also impacted by underlying medical conditions such as poly cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, etc. The underlying condition should be stabilized in order to achieve the best results from electrolysis. Pilosity (how much hair you have), heredity, medications, stress, temporary hair removal methods. All of these things can impact your individualized treatment plan.
Electrolysis is not a "one and done" treatment.
